Plant tissues Flashcards
What are the 3 types of specialised plant tissues?
Epidermis, xylem tissue, phloem tissue
What is the role of epidermis?
Single layer of closely packed cells, covering surface of plants
How is epidermis specialised to do its role?
- Covered by waxy, waterproof cuticle = Reduces water loss
- Stomata present = Allows CO2, O2, + water vapour in and out
What is the role of the xylem tissue?
Type of vascular tissue that transports water + minerals through plants
What is the xylem tissue made of?
Vessel elements, which are elongated dead cells
How is the xylem tissue specialised to do its role?
Strengthened with lignin (waterproof material) = Provides structural support for plants
What is the role of the phloem tissue?
Type of vascular tissue, responsible for transport of organic nutrients (like sucrose) from leaves/stems, where made by photosynthesis, to plant parts that need it
What is phloem tissue composed of?
- Columns of siege tube cells separated by perforated walls (sieve plates)
- Has companion cell
