Q

How are palisade cells specialised to do their role?

A
  • Contain chloroplasts to absorb light
  • Rectangular box shapes = Can be closely packed to form continuous layer
  • Thin cell walls = Increases rate of diffusion of CO2
  • Large vacuole = Maintain turgor pressure

Q

How are root hair cells specialised to do their role?

A
  • Present at surface of roots, near growing tips
  • Have long extensions (root hairs) = Increases SA of cell, which maximises uptake of water + minerals from soil

Q

How are guard cell pairs specialised to do their role?

A
  • On surface of leaves = Lets CO2 enter plants for photosynthesis
  • Change shape = When guard cells lose water become swollen due to osmotic forces
  • Cell walls thicker on 1 side = So cell doesn’t change symmetrically as volume changes
