Plant Tissues Flashcards
What are the four types of plant tissue?
Dermal, vascular, ground and meristematic.
What is dermal tissue normally?
Dermal tissue is normally a single layer of cells that surrounds the different parts of a plant
Name a type of dermal tissue
Epidermis is one type of dermal tissue
Where is the epidermis located?
Epidermis is found as a covering on leaves, stems and roots.
Describe epidermal cells
Epidermal cells often have a slightly thickened cell wall; sometimes the epidermis has a waterproof layer, called a cuticle, on its outer surface.
What is the main function of dermal tissue?
The main function of dermal tissue is to protect the plant
What does vascular tissue do?
Vascular tissue transports materials around a plant.
What type of tissue is vascular tissue (simple/complex)? Why is this?
It is a complex tissue because it consists of two types of cells: xylem and phloem.
What does xylem consist of?
Xylem consists of hollow tubes with openings called pits that run continuously from the roots, up through the stem and into the leaves.
Name two functions of xylem
- The main function of xylem is to transport water (and dissolved minerals) throughout the plant.
- The second function of xylem is to provide support.
Is phloem a dermal or vascular tissue?
It is a vascular tissue
Is xylem a dermal or vascular tissue?
It is a vascular tissue
What does phloem consist of?
Phloem consists of a series of tube-like structures found in the leaves, stems and roots of a plant.
What is the function of phloem?
To transport food from the leaves to the other parts of the plant
