Plant structure and Photosynthesis Flashcards
What is the equation for photosynthesis?
Carbon dioxide + water > (sunlight) > glucose + oxygen
What are the three key parts of a leaf?
- Mesophyll tissue
- Xylem and Phloem
- Epidermal tissue
What is the significance of the mesophyll tissue?
It’s where most of the photosynthesis in a plant occurs
What do the xylem and phloem do?
They transport things like water, mineral ion sand sucrose around the plants.
What does the epidermis tissue do
It covers the whole plant
What is photosynthesis?
The process that produces glucose (food) in plants using sunlight.
Where does photosynthesis happen in a leaf?
Inside the chloroplasts in the palisade mesophyll layer
Whereabouts in a leaf would you find the most chloroplasts?
At the top in the palisade mesophyll layer
What does the green substance chlorophyll do?
It absorbs sunlight and uses its energy to convert carbon dioxide and water into glucose
How does water get into the leaf?
Through the xylem
How does CO2 get into the leaf?
It diffuses through the leaf
