How plants use glucose Flashcards
Name the five things that plants use glucose for?
- Respiration
- Making Cell Walls
- Making Proteins
- Storing it in seeds
- Storing as starch
How do plants use glucose for respiration?
Respiration releases energy in the plant and enables it to convert the rest of the glucose into other useful substances to build new cells and grow.
How do plants use glucose for making cell walls?
Glucose in converted into cellulose for making strong cell walls.
How do plants use glucose to make proteins?
Glucose is combined with nitrate ions from the soil. This makes amino acids which are then made into proteins.
How is glucose stored in seeds?
Glucose is converted into lipids for storing in seeds such as sunflower seeds which we use to extract cooking oil.
How is glucose stored as starch?
Glucose is turned into starch and stored in the plant roots, stems and leaves, ready for use when photosynthesis isn’t happening (winter)
Why is starch better for storing than glucose?
Starch is insoluble which makes it better for storing than glucose because a cell with lots of glucose would draw in lots of water and swell up
