Stimulate the central nervous system
- A sense of power and well-being, increased self-confidence, feelings of exhilaration
- Alleviate fatigue, drowsiness
- Increase agitation, apprehension, anxiety
- Increased tolerance results in cravings and possible addictive dependence

Depressants:
A
Depress the central nervous system
- A sense of euphoria and well-being
- Sedation, calming and tranquilizing effects
- Hypnotic and anesthetic
- Addictive dependence, increased tolerance requires increased dosages

Hallucinogens:
A
Abnormal changes in perception, thought, and mood
- Alteration of the psyche, altered state of consciousness
- Do not affect the autonomic nervous system
- Generally not addictive, habit-forming
