Plant Processes Flashcards
Guard Cells
control the opening and closing of stomata
Nonvascular plant
a plant that lacks vascular tissue and true roots, stems, and leaves
Phloem
The vascular tissue through which food moves in some plants (leaves to rest of plant)
Photosynthesis
Plants use the sun’s energy to convert water and carbon dioxide into sugars (Carbon Dioxide + Water + sunlight = Sugar + Oxygen)
Respiration
The process by which cells break down molecules to release the energy they contain (Sugar + Oxygen = Energy + Carbon Dioxide + Water)
Stomata
the small openings on the undersides of most leaves through which oxygen and carbon dioxide can move
Transpiration
Evaporation of water from the leaves of a plant
Vascular Plant
a plant that has specialized tissues that conduct materials from one part of the plant to another. It has true roots, stems, and leaves.
Xylem
vascular tissue that carries water upward from the roots to every part of a plant
