Plant Pathology Flashcards
Plant pathology
The study of organisms or environmental factors that cause plant disease, the mechanisms by which they cause disease and the interactions between host and pathogen
Can store times include disease control
Plant health
The ability to carry out normal physiological functions and reproduction consistent with the genetic potential
Plant disease
The disruption of normal physiological function, biotic and abiotic factors
Disease cycle
Inoculation, pre penetration, penetration, establish, colonisation, dissemination
Innoculum
Primary- soil, root debris, crops, seeds
Secondary innoculum caused by primary infection
Pre-penetration
Fungi- produce spores
Nematodes- hatching factors
Attachment
Viruses enter directly from vector
Fungi have penetration pegs
Bacteria have mucilage and fibrillar sheath for attachment
Penetration
Direct- through root and wounds
Plants use hydrostatic pressure, fungi use penetration pegs.
Dissemination
By environment
Specific vectors- flies, aphids, bees
Non specific vectors- farming tools, farm animals,
Overwintering
Causes misshapen plant, necrosis and discolouration
Koch’s postulates
Pathogen present in all diseased tissue
Pathogen must be cultured in lab or host
Pathogen must be transmissible and cause same symptoms
Pathogen must be re isolated from host and be genetically the same
Exactions of postulates
Prions in CJD
A symptomatic carriers of cholera
Obligate parasites
Disease present in tissue, but doesn’t affect that tissue
