Plant Nutrition Flashcards
Protects the leaf and is secreted by the cells of the upper epidermis.
Waxy Cuticle
Thin and transparent to allow light to pass through. Acts as a barrier to disease organisms.
Upper epidermis
Main region for photosynthesis, column cells packed with chloroplast.
Palisade mesophyll
More spherical and loosely packed than the palisade mesophyll. Air space between them allows for gaseous exchange.
Spongy mesophyll
Acts as a protective layer, contains various stomata for gaseous exchange.
Lower epidermis
Responsible for opening and closing the stomata, contains chloroplast.
Guard cells
Pour which allows for gaseous exchange and prevents water vapour loss.
Stomata
Brings water and minerals to the leaf.
Xylem vessels
Translocates glucose from source to sink
Phloem vessels
Leaf vein, transports material throughout the leaf.
Vascular bundle
6 limiting factors of photosynthesis
i) Heat
ii) pH
iii) Light Intensity
iv) Amount of CO2
v) Amount of H2O
vi) Amount of Chlorophyll
Limiting factor:
A factor that limits the rate of reaction when there are various factors affecting the reaction. Assuming that all the other factors are at a constant level.
Do plants absorb green light?
No. Chlorophyll is green so plants reflect green light.
