Plant Nutrition Flashcards
Define photosynthesis
The process by which plants manufacture carbohydrates from raw materials using energy from light
What does chlorophyll do?
Transfers light energy into chemical energy in molecules, for the synthesis of carbohydrates
What does the plant do with sugar?
- use glucose for respiration
- convert it to starch and then to cellulose for building
- convert it to starch for storage
- convert it ro sucrose for transport
Factors that affect photosynthesis
- light intensity
- carbon dioxide concentration
- temperature
Where does carbon dioxide diffuse in from?
The stoma
What opens and closes the stoma’s hole?
Guard cells
To increase the rate of photosynthesis…
- thin
- wide and flat
- veins
- stomata
Stomata purpose
Allows gases in and out
Chlorophyll purpose
Absorbs light
Broad purpose
Large area for light absorption
Veins purpose
Transport and support
Thin purpose
Allows gases to reach cells easily
Nitrogen mineral
Making amino acids and proteins for growth
Magnesium mineral
Making chlorophyll
Where do minerals come from?
- rocks
- natural fertilisers
- artificial fertilisers
