Plant minerals Flashcards
Nitrates
Healthy growth
Phosophates
Healthy roots
Potassium
Healthy leaves and flowers
Magnesium
Making chlorophyll
Where do plants get minerals from
Soil. Minerals dissolved in soil water absorbed into root hair cells. Transported around xylem tubes
Nitrate deficiency
Poor growth - older leaves yellowed
Phosphorus defiency
Plants will have poor root growth and younger leaves look purple
potassium deficiency
plants yellow leaves with dead patches
magnesium deficiency
Plant leaves will turn yellow
Why are nitrates useful
Involved in making amino acids
Join together to form proteins needed for cell growth to grow leaves and shoots
Why is magnesium useful
The chlorophyll molecule makes plants green, contains magnesium. It cant make us much chlorophyll as it needs
Why do farmers use fertilisers
When crops are harvested minerals are removed from the ground. Add chemicals to the soil to replace missing minerals - fertilsers
NPK
Nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium
