Aerobic + Anaerobic respiration Flashcards
Def of aerobic respiration
Breaking down glucose with oxygen to release energy and producing carbon dioxide and water
Word equation for aerobic respiration
glucose + oxygen —> carbon dioxide + water (+ energy)
State where respiration occurs in a cell
mitochondria
Describe where and how respiration takes place
In mitochondria which are found in cells. Releases carbon dioxide and water with energy
How does glucose get into cells
- It is a carbohydrate found in food
- Digestion breaks down food into small molecules releasing glucose molecules
- Absorbed by wall of small intestine into bloodstream
- Around body in blood then dissolves in plasma
-Dissolved glucose diffuses into cells for respiration
Explain in detail how the reactants of respiration get into cells and what happens to the products in respiration (6 marks)
- Inhaling fills alveoli in your lungs with oxygen
-Oxygen then diffuses into your bloodstream - Oxygen is carried to the cells from the red blood cells
- Glucose comes in your body from your food
- Where it is digested and absorbed by the wall of the small intestine
- Dissolving into the plasma
- Respiration occurs in mitochondria
- Release carbon dioxide and water
- Exhale carbon dioxide
- Carbon dioxide produced in respiration diffuses into bloodstream
Anaerobic def
Releasing energy from the breakdown of glucose without oxygen producing lactic acid
Describe two differences between aerobic respiration and anerobic respiration
- Anaerobic respiration doesnt use oxygen
- Anaerobic respiration produces lactic acid which can cause muscle cramps
State and explain one situation where a mouse would use anaerobic respiration
- Running away from predator
- Anaerobic respiration because it needs oxygen in its muscles quickly and it occurs when do strenuous activity of sprint
- Extra energy required for a short period
Why cant mouse repsire anaerobically for long period
Build up of lactic acid
When does anaerobic respiration occur
Used up all oxygen in body
What does the recovery time mean
Length of time to pay back oxygen
What does oxygen do to the lactic acid
Break it down
What does the cell have to do when in oxygen debt
Create energy from glucose
