Plant Hormones Flashcards
What is auxin?
A plant hormone that controls growth near the tops of shorts and roots
What does auxin grow in response to?
Phototropism-light
Hydrotropism-water
Geotropism-gravity
What happens if the tip of a shoot is removed from a plant?
There is no auxin available and the shoot will stop growing
What does extra auxin do?
Promotes growth in the shoot but inhibits growth in the root
What happens when a shoot grows towards light?
When shoot is exposed to light, more auxin accumulates in the shaded side, this makes cells elongate in the shaded side and shoot bends towards light
What happens when shoots grow away from gravity?
When shoot grows sideways, gravity causes unequal amount of auxin so more auxin is on the lower side, thus causes the bend to shoot upwards
What happens when roots grow towards gravity?
Root growing sideways will have more auxin on lower side, but in root extra auxin inhibits growth so the root bend downwards
What happens when the roots grow towards moisture?
More auxin produced on the side with more moisture, this inhibits growth in that side, causing root to bend towards the moisture
What can plant hormones be also used for?
For weed killers
Plant cuttings
