Genes and Reproduction Flashcards
What does the nucleus contain?
Genetic material in the form of chromosomes
How many pairs of chromosomes are inside a cell?
23 pairs one from each parent
What do genes control?
Different characteristics
What is a gene?
Short length of a chromosome
What is a DNA molecule?
Long length of DNA
What is DNA?
DNA is cooked up to form the arms of the chromosomes
What is sexual reproduction?
Involved the fusion of male and female gametes, and the offspring contains a mixture of parents genes
What is used in sexual reproduction?
Mothers and fathers gametes, egg and sperm
How many chromosomes does each gamete contain?
23
What is asexual reproduction?
There is only one parent, no fusion of gametes, no mixing of chromosomes, the offspring is genetically identical to the parent
What happens in asexual reproduction?
X-shaped chromosomes have two identical halves so each chromosome splits to form identical sets of ‘half chromosomes’, then a membrane forms around each set and DNA replicates itself
