plant hormones Flashcards
what is a tropism
a tropism is a plants response to a stimulus
what is a positive tropism
it is when the plant grows towards the stimulus.
what is positive phototropism
when plant shoots grow towards light.
what is positive gravitropism (geotropism)
it is when plants grow downwards- towards the pull of gravity
what are plant hormones
plant hormones are chemicals that cause changes in plants
what do auxins do
they make cells grow longer
what do gibberellins do
they make plant shoots grow longer. they also also control when seeds germinate
what are auxins affected by and what do they cause
they are affected by light and cause phototropism in shoots.
describe how auxin affects a plant
auxin is produced in cells near the top of a shoot, auxins move to shaded part of shoot, auxins cause cell elongation on the dark side of the shoot. the light side of the shoot is closest to light
