Plant Diseases Flashcards
If it is a disease, then
• It must have developed over time
• It must be randomly distributed among the population
• Some individuals must be resistant
• Different individuals must show different forms of the disease
Major plant pathogens
Fungi (Sponge-like): leaf/fruit spot, leaf blight, rot, chlorosis, dieback,
• Bacteria (milk drops): leaf blight, canker, rot
• Nematodes (worms): root galls, reduced growth
• Virus (protein coat): stunting, leaf curl, leaf bronzing, mosaic
METHODS OF CONTROLLING PLANT DISEASES AT SIREC
Chemical control: The commonest, easiest, results are immediate.
• Fungicides
• Nematicides
• Bactericides
• Each is made up of active ingredient +inert material. Fungicides with the same active ingredient but different inert materials will have different names but same mode of activity
What is a plant disease
A disease is a dynamic, detrimental relationship between a plant an organism that parasitises or interferes with the normal processes of cells and/or tissues of the plant.
