Plant cells Flashcards
1
Q
Function and structure of the cell wall?
A
Cellulose cell wall; rigid structure; freely permeable; gives it shape; defence from pathogens
2
Q
What is the function of the vacuole?
A
Membrane lined sacs; maintenance of turgor; the membrane of it is tonoplast (selectively permeable)
3
Q
Structure of chloroplasts? (5)
A
- Double membrane structure;
- fluid enclosed is called the stroma;
- has internal network of membranes, forming flattened sacs - Thyakoids.
- Several of them are called grona (granum for plural) -joined together by a membrane called lamellae.
4
Q
What do the grana contain?
A
Chlorophyll for light dependent reactions; starch produced by photosynthesis is turned into grains
5
Q
Similarities and differences between mitochondria and chloroplasts?
A
Similarities: double membrane, both have own DNA an ribosomes, both make own proteins
- stroma vs matrix
