Plant Biology Flashcards
Dermal Tissue
The epidermis in non woody plants and epidermis and periderm in woody plants
Meristems include
apical meristem, vascular cambium, and cork cambium
Ground tissue
raised from the ground meristem and is all tissue other than the dermal and vascular tissue
Three plant organs
Stems, roots, and leaves
Above ground stem modifications
stolens, thorns, stem tendrils for climbing, or phylloclade
Phylloclade
Flattened stems functioning a leaf; ex. cacti
Underground stem modifications
Rhizomes, tubers, and bulb and corm
Root modifications
Pneumatophores (Ariel root), adventitious roots, and tuberous roots
Leaf modifications
store water, climbing leaf tendrils, spines, and to catch prey
Carnivorous plants include
Snap trap, sticky trap, pitfall trap, and suction trap
Peduncle
hold sepals, petals, stamens, and carpels
Orchid petals and sepals
three of each and a highly modified petals for easy pollination
Orchid pollination
often pollinated by a single pollinator type
Orchid stamen and carpel structure
stamens fuse to stigma and style creating column pollinators must move through
Fig structure
the fig is the peduncle of its inflorescent flowers
