Plant Flashcards
Is water lost from both surfaces of the leaf?
Yes, B and C both lost mass.
Why are the results for the upper and lower side of the leaf so different?
Because water is mainly lost from the stomata, which is blocked by the waterproofing agent.
Why do plants need stomata?
They open to allow carbon dioxide to enter
What is the thing circling the stomata?
Guard cells
Why does the width of the stomata decrease when kept in the dark?
Because it decrease the rate of transpiration, which means that less water is lost and it maintains its turgidity.
In which month of the year would photosynthesis be highest in trees?
June
In which month would the rate of growth for the plants on the ground be?
April, because April is the month with the maximum mean of light intensity, which in turn speeds up the rate of photosynthesis, which produces sugars that are then used for growth.
What are the factors of photosynthesis?
Temperature
CO2 availability
Water
Chlorophyll
Why does the plants always grow up?
Because of geotropism- auxin is distributed to the lower side of the stem, because of gravity causing the auxin to fall downwards. These auxin hormones cause the growth of the lower side if the stem, thus causing the stem to grow upwards.
What’s the word equation of photosynthesis?
Carbon dioxide + water –> glucose + oxygen
Which green substance absorbs light energy?
Chlorophyll
What other source, apart from the air, does a plant have for photosynthesis?
Respiration
What are the independent variables?
Light intensity and chlorophyll
Why may they be no starch produced somewhere?
There’s no light, or no chlorophyll
What does the anther do?
Produce the male gametes
