Q

What three ways is the small intestine adapted to absorb nutrients?

A

It is covered with villi, which give it a ‘curvy’ shape, and therefore a large surface area.
They have very thin walls, which create a small diffusion distance for the nutrients to diffuse through.
Have a rich blood supply, which enables it to absorb nutrients into the blood quicker and in a larger quantity.

Q

What is the role of isomerase in industry?

A

Used to convert glucose syrup to fructose syrup, which is put into ‘slimming’ foods and sports drinks, due to it having more sweetness at a lower amount (and lower amount of calories)

16
Q

Why do scientists recommend 60^?

A

The enzyme’s activity is still very high, above 84% at 60^, and it works better than lower temperatures at removing stains, and is not at a large enough temperature for it to be expensive to pre-incubate it.

17
Q

What is a human’s stomach like?

A

A mammal’s stomach is acidic and has a low pH

18
Q

What do mitochondria do?

A

They provide energy to build protein

19
Q

What do ribosomes do?

A

Make protein

20
Q

What is the role of bile?

A

To neutralise digested food as it enters the small intestine.
