Planet Earth Flashcards
What is a feature?
An interesting or noticeable part of something.
What is a Sphere
A round shape like a ball
What is a Surface
The outside part or top layer of something
What are sand and soil?
Sand is crumbled rock.
Soil is sand that is mixed with dead leaves or plants that is rotting.
What is the earth made of?
Of rock
How many planets are there in the Solar System?
Eight
Is Earth a planet or star?
Planet
Is Earth’s surface smooth?
No. It has huge mountains, and hollow deep parts. The hollow parts collect water like a basin.
Why is Earth called the blue planet?
Because Earth is made up of 71% water. The water makes Earth look blue from space.
Describe Earth and its features.
Earth is spherical rocky planet.
Some places are are huge rocks like mountains and some areas are hollow and covered with water.
There is also the layer of air that surrounds earth called the Earth’s atmosphere.
What’s the difference between a continent and a island?
7 large pieces of Earth’s land surface are continents
.A island is a smaller piece of land (than a continent)surrounded by sea.
What is the difference between seas, oceans and lakes.
Oceans are large areas of Earth’s salt water surfaces.
Seas are smaller salt water surfaces.
Lakes are large areas of water that have land all around them.
Name the major oceans
Atlantic Ocean
Pacific Ocean
Indian Ocean
Name the continents
Africa Asia Europe North America South America Australia Antarctica
What is the thin layer of air that surrounds the Earth called and why is it useful to us?
The atmosphere.
It protects us from the Sun’s dangerous rays and helps keep earth warm. If there was no atmosphere the Earth’s temperature would be very hot in the day and very cold at night, like on the Moon.
There are many places on Earth that are covered in large areas of water. What are these called?
The Earth’s water surfaces.
Describe a habitat.
A habitat is a special place where people, plants and animals live. It is a place where they get everything they need to survive.
How thick is the Earth’s atmosphere and what is it made of?
It extends 600km above earth and is made up of gases we need to breathe.
What is the difference between a planet and a star?
A planet is a large object that moves around a star.
A star is object in space that gives off its own light.
Is space empty?
No it has stars, planets, gases and dust, as well as man-made objects such as satellites etc.
Why do we not see the Sun at night?
Because our half of the earth is facing away from the Sun.
What is the nearest object to Earth in space?
The Moon
What is the nearest star to Earth?
The Sun
Why does the moon shine at night?
It’s the reflection of the Sun.
How do we know the Earth is not flat?
Photographs taken from space prove to us that the earth is not flat.
