1
Q

Is sound a form of movement energy?

A

Yes, sounds are made when something vibrates. If there are no vibrations, there is no sound.

Q

How do vibrations make music?

A

An input energy lîke blowing, hitting, shaking, plucking, rubbing etc starts vibrations by making part of the instrument move. The vibrations move out of the instrument through air and we hear the sound.

Q

How can sound be compared to a stone thrown into water?

A

When you throw a stone into the water little waves move away in all directions. This is similar to sound, sound energy moves away from the part that is vibrating.

Q

Explain why musical instrument are seen as systems too.

A

They have parts that work together to make it work. They also need an input energy to produce an output sound energy.

Q

What makes sounds loud or soft?

A

The amount of input energy you put in will determine how much output energy is produced. The more input energy, the louder the sound.

Q

Describe how we hear

A
  1. Sound wave passes through the air
  2. The sound wave is caught by the outer ear
  3. It then travels along the ear canal
  4. At the end of the ear canal the vibrations hit the ear drum and make it vibrate
  5. These vibrations travel through the bones of the middle ear
  6. They then travel into the innner ear
  7. In the inner ear a nerve takes a message to the brain which interprets the sound
