Planes of the Body and Motion Flashcards
Sagittal Plane
Cutting the midline. Back and Forth motion.
Frontal Plane
Imagine a window in front of you, or a mirror. A flat surface in front of you.
Transverse Plane (Horizontal Plane)
Cuts you Hamburger style. Think rotating the spine.
Anterior
Front of the body.
Posterior
Back of the body.
Flexion
Brings to front parts of the body closer together. (Forward Fold, Bicep curls) (except for knees, ankles, toes)
Extension
Opposite of Flexion (Unfolding the hip crease, uncurling the biceps) (except for knees, ankles, toes)
Rotation
Twisting or Turning of a body part about an axis
Internal Rotation
Moving toward the anterior portion of the body
External Rotation
Moving toward the posterior portion of the body
Supination
Rotation (Scooping up, like you’re holding soup.)
Pronation
Rotation (“Pournation”, like you’re pouring the soup out.)
Protraction of Scapula
Specific term for internally rotating the shoulder blades away from each other
Retraction of Scapula
Specific term for externally rotating the shoulder blades towards each other
Elevation of Scapula
Shoulder Blades go up
