Planes + Axes Flashcards
Planes - meaning and types
A plane of movement is an imaginary flat surface through the body + used to describe the direction of a movement
- Sagittal plane, Transverse plane, frontal plane
Axes - meaning + types
Axis of movement is an imaginary line which runs through the body, when a body part/whole body moves, it moves AROUND an axis
-sagittal, transverse, longitudinal
Sagittal plane
Divides body into LEFT and RIGHT side
Transverse plane
Divides body into TOP and BOTTOM
Frontal plane
Divides the body’s FRONT and BACK
Sagittal axis
Runs through the body from FRONT to BACK ( line through the belly button)
Transverse axis
Runs through body from left to right
Longitudinal axis
Runs through the body from top to bottom (vertical)
Flexion/extension
- movement types
- examples
Sagittal plane + transverse axis
- for forwards and backwards movements (direction)
Example - running, forwards roll, tucked + piked somersaults
Abduction/adduction
Frontal plane + Sagittal axis
-for side to side movements
Example - cartwheel, saving a goal
Rotations + spins
Transverse plane + longitudinal axis
- for rotating movements, CW/ACW
Example - full twist jump, discus throw rotation, ice skating spin
Planes and axis
Movements that happen around a certain plane will always happen around its corresponding axis as well
- pairs are always the same
