planes and axis Flashcards
describe sagital plane and types of movement that can occur around this plane (+examples of movement)
splits body in left and right
extension, flexion,plantar-flexion, dorsi-flexion
eg kicking a football, jumping , squatting
describe frontal plane and types of movement that can occur around this plane (+examples of movement)
splits into front and back
abduction + adduction - of the shoulder and hip
eg. jumping jacks, cartwheels
describe transverse plane and types of movement that can occur around this plane (+examples of movement)
splits body into top and bottom
horizontal ab/adduction, rotation
eg pirohette, hip rotation in a golf swing
describe sagital axis and types of movement that can occur around this axis (+examples of movement)
Runs from back through center to bellybutton
abduction + adduction - of the shoulder and hip
eg cartwheel
describe transverse axis and types of movement that can occur around this axis (+examples of movement)
left to right across the body
extension, flexion,plantar-flexion, dorsi-flexion
eg. somersault
describe longitudinal axis and types of movement that can occur around this axis (+examples of movement)
top to bottom
rotation, horizontal ab/adduction
eg pirouette
Which planes and axis go together
plane - axis
sagital - transverse
frontal - sagital
transverse - longitudinal
what is an agonist?
a muscle that contracts in a pairing to form movement
what is the antagonist?
the muscle that lengthens in a pairing to form movement
antagonistic pairings:
biceps - ?
Quads - ?
pectorals ?
Gluteals - ?
tibialis anterior - ?
- triceps
- hamstrings
- deltoids
- hip flexors
- gastrocnemius
name the 2 types of contraction
isotonic - muscle moves whilst contracting
isometric- muscle stays stationary whilst contracting
name two types of isotonic contraction and give examples
ECCENTRIC - when a muscle lengthens under tension (a lowering movement ) eg the hamstrings during a squat
CONCENTRIC - when muscle shortens under tension
eg . bicep - bicep curl
