What is the representation of place?
How individuals or organisations portray places they know about to others.
How might governments influence place meaning?
Governments might attempt to change place meaning to attract people and investment.
Why do corporate bodies attempt to change place meaning?
To generate profit.
Why might communities or local groups attempt to change place perception?
To improve local economy and the quality of life of local people. They might do this by organising food festivals to attract visitors.

What is place marketing?
Changing the way places are ‘sold’ to consumers who are the people who will come and spend money there. Marketing companies will be employed to produce websites and run advertising campaigns which promote the place.
Give an example of a place marketing campaign.
Weston-Super-Mare
Banksy created ‘Dismaland’ in 2015 which attracted hundreds of tourists and brought investment into the local economy.
What is reimaging?
Changing negative perceptions of places.
What is rebranding?
When a place is given a new identity that is appealing to people and investors and is achieved through reimaging, place marketing and regeneration schemes. Many places create logos and slogans that are designed to be instantly recognisable.
What is a case study for a place with 2 different representations.
Belfast
What is Belfasts history?
Complex history of politics in Belfast known as the ‘troubles’ has lead to high religious segregation and an image of bombs, bullets and balaclavas.
How has Belfast reimaged?
Large scale redevelopment in city centre that split it into 4 quarters that emphasise their unique history and culture. Eg: The titanic quarter now contains many businesses such as IBM, Microsoft and Titanic studios.
How did Belfast reimaging affect their tourism?
Increased significantly attracting 6.5 million visitors and £450 million to the local economy.
What is the example for rebranding?
Amsterdam 2005.
Explain how Amsterdam’s image was threatened.
-Social and economic decline in some areas.
