Explain the difference between place and space

A

Space is an area that does not have any meaning attached to it whereas a place is a space that has had specific meaning attached to it by people. One person’s space is another person’s space

How can meaning be attached to an area?

A

Either directly or indirectly.
Direct meaning comes from experinencing a place first hand through the senses whilst indirect meaning is mediated by symbols and art (often this is informed by informal representations of place)

Explain the difference between locational and place knowledge

A

Locational knowledge is knowing the geographic points on a map whereas place knowledge is knowing the complex workings of a place, underneath the skin of places. Place knowledge requires deeper knowledge of a place and gives a bigger, cultural picture
