A space that has specific meaning to people

Spaces are areas which do not have meanings in the same way that places do
Define informal representation of space
A way of representing places using diverse media such as TV, film
Define formal representation of space
Involves using specific data to represent a place e.g the census or IMD data
Define globalisation
The process by which the world is becoming increasingly interconnected as a result of massively increased trade and cultural exchange
Define locational knowledge
Knowledge of the geographic points on a map
Define place knowledge
Knowledge of the complex workings of a place, underneath the skin of places
Define deindustrialisation
The decline of manufacturing in the economy of a country or region
Define gentrification
The moving in of wealthier people into an area who improve the area at the expense of the existing inhabitants, changing the economic and social geography

Process by which some groups of a population move out of an area
Define filtering
a process by which social groups move from one residential area to another, leading to changes in the social nature of residential areas.
Define industrialisation
The process by which an area changes from being mainly agricultural to one of industrial activity, often linked to technological advance
