Coasts- definitions Flashcards
Aeolian
erosional, transportational, and depositional processes by the wind
Attrition
The erosion of sediment transported by rivers, glaciers, winds, and waves
Backwash
The flow of water down a beach after a wave has broken
Beach recharge
the addition of sediment to a beach by humans to increase its size and volume
Biological weathering
the breakdown of rocks through the chemical and physical action of living organisms
Chelation
A type of chemical weathering caused by acids derived from rainwater and dead organic material
Chemical weathering
The in situ break down of rocks by chemical processes such as oxidation, solution, and hydrolysis
Coastal squeeze
The erosion of mudflats, sand flats, and beaches, trapped between rising sea level and hard coastal defence structures (e.g sea walls)
Concordant
A coastline with bands of different geologies lying parallel to the shore
Abrasion
The scouring and erosion of rock surfaces by sediments transported by rivers, glaciers, waves, and wind
Cusps
A pointed and regular arc pattern of sediment on a beach
Deposition
the laying down of sediment transported by rivers, waves, glaciers and wind, as energy level decline
Landscape
An area, as perceived by people, whose character is the results of the action and interaction of natural and/or human factors
Landform
A physical feature on the Earth’s surface
Erosion
The wearing away of material by the action of ice, wind, and water which is then moved away
