Define location
Where a place is on a map, its latitude and longitude coordinates.
Define locale
Each place is made up of a series of locales where everyday life activities take place.
“Not just the mere address but the where of social life and environmental transformations”
What could be the physical characteristics of a place?
They derive from geological, hydrological, atmospheric and biological process. Land forms, bodies of water, climate, soils, natural vegetation, and animal life.
What could be the human characteristics of a place?
They derive from human ideas and actions. Bridges, houses and parks, density of population, language patterns, religion, architecture, and political systems.
What are endogenous factors?
The characteristics of a place or factors which have originated internally.
What are exogenous factors?
The relationship of one place with other places and the eternal factors which affect this.
What is a sense of place?
The subjective and emotional attachment to place, its meaning.
What are the unique characteristics that create sense of place?
The physical geography, the demographics and economic characteristics, endo and exogenous factors.
How does one develop a sense of place?
Through visiting, watching documentaries, poetry, media, cinema, sports, art, associated experience.
Why might the sense of place one has on a the same place be different to others’ sense of place?
Outsiders: no emotional connection
Insider: Fluent in the local language and understands unspoken rules of society, may feel more safe and secure.

What is the project for public spaces?
A place diagram which portrays a criteria as to what makes a successful place.
What does the inside ring of the place diagram portray?
Four main points which you can evaluate a place by: sociability, uses and activities, access and linkages and comfort and image.
What does the middle ring of the place diagram portray?
A number of intuitive or qualitative aspects by which to judge a place: interaction, connectedness, safety and activeness.
What does the outer ring of the place diagram portray?
The quantitative aspects that can be measured through statistics or research: traffic data, crime statistics, local business ownership and evening use.
