Place and Manner of Production Flashcards
Bilabial sounds
Sounds produced using both lips
E.g. p, b, m, w
Labiodental sounds
Using the upper teeth and lower lip
E.g. f, v
Dental sounds
Using the upper teeth and tongue
E.g. th
Alveolar sounds
Using the tip of the tongue and the alveolar ridge (behind the top teeth)
E.g. n, t, d, s, l, r
Palato-alveolar sounds
Flat part (blade) of the tongue and the hard palate behind the alveolar ridge E.g. sh, ch, j, zj (Asia)
Palatal sounds
The flat part of the tongue and the soft palate
E.g. y
Velar sounds
The back of the tongue and the soft palate
E.g. k, g, ng
Glottal sounds
Between the two vocal folds
E.g. h
Stop/plosive
Two structures COMPLETELY block the passage of air through the vocal tract, resulting in a build up of pressure behind the closure. When the closure is released, there is a burst of air. E.g. p, b, t, d, k, g
Nasal
Air rushes through the nose to create sound
E.g. n, m, ng
Fricative
Narrow constriction of oral cavity. Air rushes through creating a noisy, “long” sound
E.g. s, sh, f, v th, z,
Affricate
Made in the palatal area as a combination of a stop followed by a fricative
E.g. ch, j
Liquid
Very little oral constriction
E.g. l, r
Glide
Very little oral constriction
Always followed by a vowel
E.g. w, y
