Provide a definition for CAS
CAS is a neurological childhood SSD in which the planning and thus precision of movements underlying speech are impaired.
What are some of the features of CAS?
Inconsistent errors on consonants and vowels
Inappropriate prosody
Lengthened/disrupted coarticulator transitions between sounds and syllables
Where is the breakdown in CAS?
At the level of motor planning. Children with CAS don’t have well-refined representations, because of their poor motor execution of sounds.
What treatment options are available for CAS?
Nullfield Dyspraxia Programme and PROMPT
What are some associated difficulties with CAS?
Social communication difficulties that stem from unintelligibility
Behavioural disregulation - temperament issues
Other oro-motor difficulties (eating/drinking/saliva control)
