PL.3 Flashcards
Hydrolysis of esters and amides
1
Q
What are two ways of hydrolyzing an ester?
A
Acidic hydrolysis and alkaline hydrolysis.
2
Q
What does the acidic hydrolysis of esters produce?
A
Carboxylic acid and alcohol, it is essentially the opposite of esterification.
3
Q
What does the alkaline hydrolysis of esters produce?
A
Carboxylate salt and alcohol.
4
Q
What does the acid hydrolysis of amides produce?
A
Carboxylic acid and an alkyl ammonium cation.
5
Q
What does the alkaline hydrolysis of amides produce?
A
A carboxylate ion which may form a salt, and amine.
