pk 10 - Breathing in Unusual Environments Flashcards
1
Q
What is hyperpnea?
A
Increase in breathing rate that is proportional to metabolic rate, e.g. during exercise
This is in order to keep arterial CO2 constant
2
Q
What is the anaerobic threshold?
A
Due to accumulation of lactic acid and carotid body stimulation
3
Q
What is a mechanism for exercise hyperpnea?
A
CO2 sensitivity goes up but CO2 stays stable
4
Q
What is the cause of the symptoms of AMS?
A
Acute mountain syndrome
Respiratory alkalosis
5
Q
It was predicted that you couldn’t climb everest without oxygen as PaO2 would be incompatible with life.
How was it done?
A
Metabolic compensation - kidneys return pH
Bohr effect - very severe alkalosis the Hb curve shifts to the left so Hb stayed quite saturated
