Pituitary hormones Flashcards
What hormones are produced in the anterior pituitary gland?
FLAT PG FSH LH ACTH - adrenocorticotropic hormone TSH - thyroid stimulating hormone Prolactin Growth hormone
What hormones are produced in the posterior pituitary gland?
Oxytocin Antidiuretic hormone (ADH) aka vasopressin
What stimulates the release of ADH/vasopressin?
Increased plasma osmolarity
Hypovolaeia
What is diabetes inspidus?
PUPD due to absent or reduced ADH
Or due to kidney no longer sensitive to ADH
How does ADH work for it’s renal actions?
Binds to receptors in distal tubule and collecting ducts of nephron
Increases insertion of aquaporins = permeability to water
How does ADH work for non-renal actions?
Causes contraction of smooth muscle, particularly in CV system
Also stimulates ACTH release
What can be used for treatment of diabetes inspidus? What are the adverse effects?
ADH receptor agonist
Cardiovascular effects
