PITUITARY GLAND Flashcards
What type of tissue is the anterior pituitary derived from?
Glandular tissue
How does the posterior pituitary differ from the anterior pituitary? (2)
The posterior has a neuronal origin and doesn’t actually make hormones
What factors are responsible for regulating anterior pituitary hormone production and release? (2)
- Hypothalamic releasing and inhibiting factors
- negative feedback from peripheral hormones
Where is the hypothalamus located?
Base of the brain
How is the hypothalamus regulated?
- Hormone mediated signals like negative feedback
- Neural inputs mediated by NTs
Where is the pituitary gland located?
Bony cavity in the base of the brain
Name 6 hormones produced in the hypothalamus
- GHRS
- Somatostatin
- GnRH
- CRH
- TRH
- Dopamine
Name 6 hormones produced in the anterior pituitary gland
- GH
- FSH & LH
- ACTH
- Thyroid stimulating hormone (TSH)
- Prolactin
Which hormone stimulates GH and which hormone inhibits GH?
Stimulates = GHRH
Inhibits = somatostatin
What role does dopamine play?
Inhibits prolactin secretion
What role does GnRH play?
Stimulates secretion of FSH and LH
What mediates the release of Growth hormone?
IGF - 1
What stimulates the release of GH?
Hypoglycaemia, sleep and exercise
What surpresses the release of GH
Hyperglycaemia
What is the purpose of growth hormones? (5)
- Linear growth in children
- Protein synthesis
- Lipolysis
- Acquisition of growth mass
- Psychological wellbeing
