INTRO TO PHARMACOKINETICS Flashcards
Pharmacodynamics definition
How a drug works/ what a drug does
Pharmacokinetics definition
When a drug works/ is activated; at what time and at what concentration
What is the therapeutic window?
The difference between the effective concentration and the toxic concentration
What the abbreviation regarding pharmacokinetic research and what does it stand for?
ADME- too
A - Absorption
D - Distribution
M - Metabolism
E - Excretion
A+D refer to the mechanisms of how the drug gets to the site of action
M+E refer to how the drug is removed from the site of action
What are the routes of administration?
- Entral
- Parentral
- Percutaneous
What factors affect the absorption of a drug?
- One compartment model
- Diffusion - is it passive or active?
- Blood flow at site of admin
- Route of administration
- Bioavailability
- Drug solubility
- Dose of drug
Explain the one compartment model
When a drug enters the body, it diffuses everywhere and is equilibrated. This allows it to eventually reach the target receptors and carry out changes to the bio system
Explain passive diffusion with regards to drug absorption
Passive - Drug diffuses through:
- sheets of cells forming epithelia
- intracellular pores - found in some blood vessels for the diffusion of small water soluble molecules
Explain pinocytosis
molecules that travel through membrane via active transport and facilitated diffusion. They are vesicles that are taken up and released on the other side
