PIREPs Flashcards
Study and master understanding the basic abbreviations for pilot reports.
UA
Routine report
UUA
Urgent report (used in the case of: Tornadoes, funnel clouds, waterspouts, severe turbulence, severe icing, hail, or a low-level wind shear hazard)
PIREP
A report of the actual weather conditions as encountered by an aircraft in flight
/OV
Location
/TM
Time in 4 digits in UTC
/FL
Altitude/Flight level
/TP
Aircraft type
/SK
Cloud layers
a. height of cloud base (h ft.)
b. cloud cover symbol
c. height of cloud tops (h ft.)
d. / to separate layers
e. space to separate sub elements
/WX
Weather (flight visibility reported first, use standard weather symbols)
/TA
Temperature in Celsius (below zero, use - before number)
/WV
Wind (direction and speed in six digits)
/TB
Turbulence (use CAT and CHOP when necessary)
/IC and specific classes
Icing (include class: CLEAR, RIME, MIXED)
- Clear ice is when water droplets gradually freeze in contact with the airplane (hard and glossy)
- Rime ice is when small water droplets rapidly freeze before they can spread across most of the wing (brittle and frost-like)
- Mixed ice is when water droplets vary in size and or snow mixes with the water droplets and causes an ice build up on the leading edge, and the ice is rough.
/RM
