Monitoring prior to starting pioglitazone
A
LFT
If ALT more than 2.5x the upper limit of normal, or any indication of liver disease, do not start.
Bone fracture and CVD risk
Bladder cancer risk

Continued monitoring when taking pioglitazone
A
LFTs periodically - based on judgement
Signs and symptoms of HF - weight gain or oedema
- Stop if any deterioration is seen.
Assess safety and efficacy 3-6 months after.

Adverse effects of pioglitazone
A
Numbness, visual impairment, weight increase, insomnia
Increased risk of bone fractures
Increased risk of infection
Bladder cancer
Hepatic impairment (rare)
