what are the side effects of hydrochlorothiazide
HCTZ is a diuretic. There is a concern for hypotension induced dizziness and syncope. Diuretics can precipitate hypokalemia and hyponatremia.
Can also raise blood glucose and cause worsening lipid profile side effects, can cause hypercalcemia and uric acid retention
What metronidazole side effect must patients be warned about?
Most common are: GI upset, disulfiram like reaction when taking metron. and drinking alcohol
*Disulfiram like reaction includes nausea, tahycardia, flushing, etc.
What are the age criteria for colonoscopy?
- Every 10 years beginning at age 50
- If a first degree relative is diagnozed with colon cancer before 60 or 2 are diagnosed at any age, screening begins at 40 or 10 years earlier than they were diagnosed
- Ig a genetic cause is known, screening is the same as 2 but occurs at 5 year intervals
Treatment for bacterial vaginosis?
flagyl PO or vaginal application
-Clindamycin
*Gardnerelia vaginalis does not need to be treated in asymptomatic women
What ist he drug of choice for acute sinusitis? 2nd line? 3rd line?
First: amoxicillin
*May also go to coxycycline in penicillin allergic patients
Second: Levaquin or macrolides or cephalosporins
Diagnostic criteria for diabetes mellitus II?
- Random glucose > 200 mg/dl, later confirmed by fasting glucose > 126 mg/dl
- Oral glucose tolerance test 2-h postload value > 200 mg/dl
- Symptoms in conjunction with random plasma glucose > 200mg/dl
Most common side effect of statins?
Myalgias, or muscle aches
-rarely rhabdomyolysis leading to kidney injury
*Different statins have different risks of myopathy
