• Ships side unobstructed for 6m.
• 5th stop from the bottom is a spreader.
• Steps equal spacing and firmly against ships side.
• Maximum of 9 steps between spreaders.
• Handheld stanchions fitted.

Question 2

What are the requirements for pilot ladders on ships of freeboards 9m or more?

Answer 2

• Pilot/Accommodation ladder arrangement if no side door available.
• Climb not less than 1.5m and not more than 9m.
• Ladder must extend at least 2m above platform.
• Platform to be horizontal and secured to the ships side.
• Ladder must extend through the platform if a trapdoor arrangement is used.

Question 3

What are the dimensions of ropes and spreaders, and measurement between the steps on the pilot ladder?

Answer 3

• Side ropes minimum diameter 18mm.
• Spreader 180cm long.
• Minimum 40cm horizontal spacing between side ropes.
• 31-35cm vertical spacing between steps.
