- Ships side unobstructed for 6m.
- 5th stop from the bottom is a spreader.
- Steps equal spacing and firmly against ships side.
- Maximum of 9 steps between spreaders.
- Handheld stanchions fitted.

What are the requirements for pilot ladders on ships of freeboards 9m or more?
A
- Pilot/Accommodation ladder arrangement if no side door available.
- Climb not less than 1.5m and not more than 9m.
- Ladder must extend at least 2m above platform.
- Platform to be horizontal and secured to the ships side.
- Ladder must extend through the platform if a trapdoor arrangement is used.

A
- Side ropes minimum diameter 18mm.
- Spreader 180cm long.
- Minimum 40cm horizontal spacing between side ropes.
- 31-35cm vertical spacing between steps.
