What is community policing?
A philosophy that promote organizational strategies that support the systematic use of partnerships and problem-solving techniques to proactively address the immediate conditions that rise to public safety issues, such as crime, disorder, in fear of crime
Research shows that informal social control is a much more powerful mechanism for current control and reduction than is formal punishment
Community policing should be infused throughout the culture in organizational structure of law enforcement agencies
Agency should’ve evaluate their officers on their efforts to engage members of the community and the partnerships they build
Should engage in multidisciplinary community team approaches for planning, implementing and responding to crisis situations
Collaboration
Should establish formal community/citizen, advisory committees to assist in developing crime prevention, strategies and agency policies, as well as provide input on policing issues
Larger agency should establish multiple committees to ensure they inform all levels of the organization
Asian should adopt policies and programs that address the needs of children and youth, most at risk for crime or violence and reduce aggressive enforcement, tactics and stigmatize youth and marginalized their participation in schools and communities
Should work with schools to the creation of alternatives to student suspensions and expulsion through restorative justice, diversion, counseling, and family interventions
Communities need to affirm and recognize the voices of youth in community decision-making, facilitate research of problem solving and develop and fund youth leadership training, life skills through positive, youth and police collaboration, and interactions
