Pillar 1 - Week 1 Flashcards
What’s nutrition?
The proccess of taking in and assimalating nutrients form food nesisary for health of the body
What are the five Nutrients?
Carbohydrates
Fats
Proteins
Vitamins
Minerals
What are the three macronutrients?
Carbohydrates
Fats
Proteins
What are the two Micronutrients?
Vitimins
Minerals
What are the nutrients that provide your body energy called?
Macronutrients
What do Micronutrients do to the human body?
They help your
body convert calorie-containing protein, fats, and carbohydrates into energy.
What are carbohydrates?
carbohydrates are organic compounds that contain single, double, or
multiple sugar units. And your body looks to carbohydrates as pretty much its main energy source because carbs are broken down more easily by the body than other macronutrients, protein and fat.
What the three types of carbodhydrates?
SImple Carbohydrates, Complex Carbohydrates, and FIber
WHat does fiber do?
Helps food move through the digestive track. Can’t be digested and has no callories.
What organs need Carohydrtates?
Brain, Kidneys, Muclles, and the heart.
What Macronutrient is crucial for intestinal health?
Fiber
What are Fats
Hydrophobic, Maitnance and gives protection of cellular memory.
Fats have how many calories per gram?
9
Carbs and protiens have how many calories per gram?

What are protein?
On a cellular level, proteins make up or create the
blueprint that defines the different working organelles of a cell, like the
mitochondria and the ribosomes.
proteins are required for the structure structure, the function, and regulation of the body’s cels, tissues and organs.
proteins are made up of hundreds of small units called amino acids, which are attached to each other in long chains to
make up a protein.
Now, there are over 20 different types of amino acids that
can be combined to make a protein.
And proteins are important in the diet because they are used to produce new tissue for growth. They’re used to repair damaged tissues. And proteins really define what an organism is, what it looks like, and how it behaves.
The body is made up of thousands of proteins. So, proteins also make up the majority of enzymes that are used for digestion and immunity.
Hormones, such as Human Growth Hormone and insulin, require the aminoacid that make up proteins. Proteins might be used as a source of energy if carbohydrates are not available. It’s usually a secondary source of fuel for the body, as it likes to save proteins for growth and development and repair.
