To visit a place of religious significance to renew and improve religious beliefs.

India and Nepal. Buddha was born, reached enlightenment, taught the Dharma and died in these modern countries.
What does the Dalai Lama believe about the importance of pilgrimage?
It reminds people of the Master, Lord Buddha. It develops a strong sense of compassion. Pilgrims should return as better people as a result of the experience.

Why is Bodh Gaya an important place for Buddhist pilgrims?
Siddhartha Gautama became the Buddha as he meditated under a tree at Bodh Gaya. The tree was destroyed by King Asoka before he became a Buddhist. Asoka later planted a new tree here.
Why is Sarnath an important place for Buddhist pilgrims?
Sarnath is where Buddha gave his first sermons (talks) on the Middle Way, the Four Noble Truths and the Eightfold Path. The first monastery was built here.
Why is Kushinagar an important place for Buddhist pilgrims?
Kushinagar is the site of Buddha’s death. It is the place where he attained parinirvana (nirvana after death).
