Bioethical Issues in Buddhism Flashcards
Changing the DNA of a plant or animal to make the end result more desirable
Genetic engineering
How do Buddhists view genetic engineering?
If the process reduces suffering or extends life, it is acceptable. If the process creates more suffering it is against the First Precept.
Using DNA to make an exact copy of a living thing, or part of a living thing
Cloning
How do Buddhists view cloning?
If the process reduces suffering or extends life, it is acceptable. If the process creates more suffering it is against the First Precept. If the process is carried out for the gratification (happiness) of the researcher it would break the Third Precept.
A person’s diseased or useless organ is replaced by a new organ from a different person
Transplant
How do Buddhists view transplants?
If it is a gift without some kind of payment, Buddhists accept this process as it gives others a better life. If the person who donated an organ was forced to do it, the Second Precept would be broken.
Researchers believe cells can be used to repair damaged body parts or grow new organs
Stem cell research
How do Buddhists view stem cell research?
If the cells have come from a consenting adult, it is acceptable. If the cells are from an embryo that will not have a chance to grow, it is against the First Precept.
Using animals to test products (including make up and medicines) before they are given to humans
Animal experimentation
How do Buddhists view animal experimentation?
It breaks the First, Second and Third Precepts. There is debate about testing lifesaving drugs on animals.
When a person, usually a criminal, is killed for something he/she has done
Capital punishment
How do Buddhists view capital punishment?
It is completely unacceptable to kill another person as it breaks the First and Second Precepts. The idea of killing for revenge breaks the Third Precept.
When a pregnancy is ended through a medical procedure
Abortion
How do Buddhists view abortion?
In Buddhism, awareness of life means that abortion breaks the First and Second Precepts. If a woman knows she is pregnant and has an abortion then this is not acceptable in Buddhism.
