Piaget's Development Theory Flashcards
Age of Sensorimotor
birth to 2 years
Sensorimotor=
beginning of problem solving
Age of PRe-Operational
2 to 7 years
Pre-Operational
Conservation & Reversability
Age of Concrete Operational
7 to 12 years
Concrete Operational=
Classification, Identification, Inferences
Age of Formal Operational
13 years to Adult
Formal Operational=
Abstract Thinking
What stage is object permanence (or impermanence)?
Sensorimotor
What stage? pretend play; symbols to represent things; very egocentric
Pre operational
what stage? conservation; water experiment
Concrete operational
what stage? abstract concepts; consequences of potential actions
formal operational
Piaget’s Model of Cognitive Development was influenced by
J.J. rousseau
A child’s reasoning and understanding emerges naturally in stages, helped most if the child is given
the freedom to explore their environment
Why is sensorimotor called that?
infants are taking in their sensory world and organizing it by reflexes and patterns; later they begin to respond to the sensations
explain why the pre-operational stage is called that
operational means logical thinking, so this stage is pre-logical thinking; thinking is not very logical because they can only think about 1 piece of information at a time. (they are easily tricked, as in peek a boo)
Explain why ages 7 to 11 are called concrete operational thought
concrete logic; they understand processes such as addition and subtraction but will falter with more abstract concepts like x and y in Algebra; Only at this point will they understand that Principle of Conservation
the last stage is Formal Operational. Why?
it is the world of the possible; there are double meanings and new cognitive horizons; formal or “abstract” material of thought; hypothetical situations
