Piaget and chompsky (cognitive Development) Flashcards
What are Piaget 4 stages of cognitive development
Sensorimotor
Preoperational
Concrete operational stage
Formal operational stage
What is the sensorimotor stage
The main achievement during this stage is object permanence. It requires the ability to form a mental representation of the object (ie schema)
What is the Preoperational stage
During this stage young children can think about things symbolically is the ability to make one thing - a word or an object - stand for something than itself.
Thinking is still egocentric, and the infant has difficulty taking the viewpoint of others
What is concrete operational stage
Piaget considered the concrete stage a major turning point in the child’s cognitive development because it marks the beginning of logical or operational thought.
Children can conserve number (age 6), mass (age 7), and weight (age 9).
What is formal operational stage
The formal operational stage begins at approximately age eleven
and lasts into adulthood. During this time, people develop the ability to think about abstract concepts and logically test hypotheses.
Meaning of schemas
Building blocks of intellectual intelligence
4 stages of Piagets schema development (object permanence)
Assimilation
Equilibrium
Disequilibrium
Accommodation
What were the three mountains test
Piagetian test used to assess visual perspective taking in children. A doll is placed at various locations around a three-dimensional display of three mountains, and children must indicate how the doll sees the display.
Children younger than 8 years old have difficulty performing this test correctly, although they are able to understand that others have a visual perspective that is different from their own when less complicated tasks are used.
What are criticisms of piagets work
A major source of inspiration for the theory was Piaget’s observations of his own three children. In addition to this, the other children in Piaget’s small research sample were all from well-educated professionals of high socioeconomic status. Because of this unrepresentative sample, it is difficult to generalize his findings to a larger population.
What is LAD (stand)
Language Acquisition Device
What does Noah Chompsky say about LAD
- language is genetically programmed in their system
- language development happens because of maturation
-the brain picks up rules. Plurals and such
Criticisms of Chomsky
Argues that social interaction is more important
Lack of scientific evidence
Too much emphasis
Ignores that children with learning disabilities
infancy 0-3 months language development
make mouth movement in response to parent
cries to ask for food or comfort
6-12 months language development
understands some words such as byebye
makes sounds such as gaga
18 months language development
can say between 6 and 10 words
can follow simple instructions
