Q

What is the sensorimotor stage

A

The main achievement during this stage is object permanence. It requires the ability to form a mental representation of the object (ie schema)

Q

What is the Preoperational stage

A

During this stage young children can think about things symbolically is the ability to make one thing - a word or an object - stand for something than itself.

Thinking is still egocentric, and the infant has difficulty taking the viewpoint of others

Q

What is concrete operational stage

A

Piaget considered the concrete stage a major turning point in the child’s cognitive development because it marks the beginning of logical or operational thought.

Children can conserve number (age 6), mass (age 7), and weight (age 9).

Q

What is formal operational stage

A

The formal operational stage begins at approximately age eleven
and lasts into adulthood. During this time, people develop the ability to think about abstract concepts and logically test hypotheses.

Q

What were the three mountains test

A

Piagetian test used to assess visual perspective taking in children. A doll is placed at various locations around a three-dimensional display of three mountains, and children must indicate how the doll sees the display.

Children younger than 8 years old have difficulty performing this test correctly, although they are able to understand that others have a visual perspective that is different from their own when less complicated tasks are used.

Q

What are criticisms of piagets work

A

A major source of inspiration for the theory was Piaget’s observations of his own three children. In addition to this, the other children in Piaget’s small research sample were all from well-educated professionals of high socioeconomic status. Because of this unrepresentative sample, it is difficult to generalize his findings to a larger population.

Q

What does Noah Chompsky say about LAD

A
  • language is genetically programmed in their system
  • language development happens because of maturation
-the brain picks up rules. Plurals and such

Q

2-3 years language development

A

link words together for example me car

vocabular increasing to approximately 200 words in 2 and a half years

17
Q

3-5 years early childhood language development

A

uses simple sentences

asks questions

may use incorrect forms of words for example i good

18
Q

8 years language development

A

speaks in complex sentences

can reason and explain

19
Q

Meaning of conservation

A

Conservation is an idea used b Piaget to explain childrens logical thinking. For example, the shape of a container may change but the amount of water it holds remains the same

20
Q

What did Piaget conserve with his experiment

A

Children younger than 7 years cannot think about more than one part of a situation at any one time

When a child reaches 7 years old (the concrete operational stage), they can also observe the amount of water inside, despite the size the water will stay the same amount

21
Q

What is egocentrism

A

Not having to able to see things from others point of view (only seeing your point of view)
