Physiology: The Cardiac Cycle Flashcards
What are the events that take place during the cardiac cycle?
- Late diastole
- Atrial systole - atrial contraction so that blood is pushed into ventricles
- Isovolumic ventricular contraction - pushes AV valves closed
- Ventricular ejection - ventricular pressure exceeds the pressure of the arteries causing them to open
- Isovolumic ventricular relaxation - ventricles relax, causing ventricular pressure to fall causing blood to flow back and closing the semilunar valve
What occurs during systoles?
Ventricular contraction with semilunar valves open and AV valves are closed
What occurs during diastole?
Atrial contraction and the atrioventricular valves open and semilunar valves are close
What is Systolic pressure?
Highest pressure of the ventricles
What is Diastolic Pressure?
Lowest pressure observed in the ventricles
What is a systolic murmur?
Abnormal heart sound occur during systole of the heart
What is a diastolic murmur?
Abnormal heart sound occurring during diastole of the heart
What can cause a systolic murmur?
Aortic or pulmonary stenosis
Mitral and Tricuspid regurgitation
What can cause a diastolic murmur?
Mitral or Tricuspid stenosis
Aortic or Pulmonary regurgitation
What do normal physiological heart sounds sound like?
Lub Dub
What do systolic heart sounds sound like?
