Physiology: Short term control of blood pressure Flashcards
What is the formula of MAP?
MAP = CO x TPR
What is the MAP in circulation?
Driving force pushing blood through the circulation
What happens when blood pressure is too low?
Fainting (syncope)
What happens when blood pressure is too high?
Hypertension
How do baroreceptors pick up changes in pressure?
They are stretch sensitive
What are the carotid sinus baroreceptors innervated by?
Glossapharyngeal nerve
What are the aortic arch baroreceptors innervated by?
Vagus Nerve
What is the name of the centres in the brain that control blood pressure?
Medullary Cardiovascular Centres
What does vagus nerve stimulation cause to the heart?
Decrease in HR
Parasympathetic
What does sympathetic nerve stimulation cause to the heart?
Increase in HR
Increase in muscle contraction venoconstriction and arteriolar constriction
Name the inputs of the medullary cardiovascular centres
Carotid sinus baroreceptors Aortic arch baroreceptors Cardiopulmonary Baroreceptors Central Chemoreceptors Chemoreceptors in muscle Joint receptors Higher Centres
