physiology of the limbic system Flashcards
stimulation of lateral hypothalamus
thirst, eating, rage & fighting
stimulation of ventromedial nucleus
satiety, decreased eating & tranquility
stimulation of periventricular nuclei or stimulation of the central gray area of mesencephalon (continuous with hypothalamus)
fear & punishment rxns
stimulation of most anterior & most posterior hypothalamus
sexual drives
bilateral lesions in lateral hypothalamus
decreased drinking & eating –> starve to death, extreme passivity
bilateral lesions of ventromedial areas of hypothalamus
excessive drinking & eating
hyperactivity & frequent bouts of extreme rage upon slightest provocation
where are the reward centers located?
recall they send inhibitory signals to repress rage
lateral and ventromedial nuclei of the hypothalamus
where are the punishment centers located?
central gray area around aqueduct of sylvius extending up into the hypothalamus & thalamus
amygdala
hippocampus
what happens if there is an ablation to the anterior temporal cortex & amygdala?
kluver bucy syndrome (fits of rage)
what happens if there is an ablation to the posterior orbital frontal cortex?
insomnia & motor restlessness
what happens if there is an ablation to the anterior cingulate gyri & subcallosal gyri?
viscous behavior
